Broncos Diontae Spencer named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Dec 16, 2020, 9:25 AM

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos wide receiver Diontae Spencer was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance in Denver’s 32-27 win against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, the NFL announced.

This marks the first conference recognition of Spencer’s career and the third AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honor by a Bronco this season (K Brandon McManus, Weeks 4 & 5).

Against the Panthers, Spencer scored his first career touchdown on an 83-yard punt return in the first quarter. The play, which gave Denver an early 6-0 lead, tied for the seventh longest punt return in Broncos history and the third-longest punt return in the NFL this season.

Spencer is the first Broncos returner to earn AFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors since wide receiver Trindon Holliday in Week 2 of the 2013 season. Overall, he is the 29th Bronco to earn that recognition since the award was initiated by the NFL in 1993.

For the season, Spencer has returned 10 punts for 175 yards with his 17.5-yard average ranking second in the NFL (min. 10 PR). He also has nine kickoff returns for 154 yards (17.1 avg.), one rush for nine yards and one reception for seven yards.
