The Broncos coaches embarrassed themselves at the end of the game

Oct 2, 2020, 3:34 PM

If you want to watch pure stupidity in sports, where egos overrule common sense, take a gander at the last minute of the Broncos-Jets game.

What a mess!

Jets head coach Adam Gase and Broncos head coach Vic Fangio put their players in a ridiculous and dangerous situation. With 1:03 to go in the game, it was first down at the Jets 33. The Broncos had a nine-point lead.

The Broncos took a knee. The Jets called a timeout. Why?

The only purpose for a TO is to get the ball back, but even by using their second timeout and assuming the Broncos take a third knee, basic math would tell you there would be less than :15 seconds to play in the game when you would theoretically get the ball back on a punt as a field goal would be truly ridiculous.

But this decision opens the door for taking a field goal shot. The Jets have another opportunity to think about how this is gonna be perceived and they call another time out at :57. Again. Why?

Brett Rypien gets how stupid this is and is shaking his head. Like, “C’mon, you gotta be kidding me?” There is nothing bad happening at this point between most of the players. There are lots of handshakes and fist bumps recognizing a hard-fought game.

Okay.

Third knee – time winds down to :00 on the play clock. Now, it’s time for the Broncos coaches to be idiots. They call a timeout with :13 to go! Why?

All they have to do is punt the ball, which would kill at least five seconds. So, with eight seconds left in the game, the Jets would have the ball at their own 20. On defense, you could literally lay on the ground, let them score a TD and there would be no time on the clock. There is zero way for the Jets to win. Zero!

Likely, the Jets would recognize how dumb their coaches were to call timeouts and simply run out of bounds or lay down themselves or whatever.

The Broncos calling timeout and then discussing how to work off 13 seconds is a terrible insult and really, really dumb for the health of their players. The Jets had nothing to lose!

So what happens? Sure enough, the Jets are insulted so Gregg Williams dials up a blitz. Gase probably had nothing to do with it. However, he caused this problem by calling the dumb timeouts in the first place. He was basically telling his team that he wanted them to tee off on the Broncos.

NEVER SURRENDER!!!!

So, the Jets bring the heat and they don¹t care that they are offsides. Why would they? They have just been given permission to crush the QB and there’s nothing the Broncos could’ve done except to literally hold the Jets player in front of them.

Idiotic!

Why put your players in that position!!!????

But, it all stupidly happens and Ryp get blasted. Not even a dirty shot. Just a really hard hit while he is tossing the ball away where it is impossible to burn off 13 seconds.

Who is this obvious to? Well, everybody! It’s why color analyst Troy Aikman pointed it out.

Okay, that was dumb and thank god Rypien wasn’t hurt. Now temperatures are boiling. There’s a flag for offsides not a personal foul. Still fourth down. Now, a high punt ends the game and likely everybody will get that. But, after talking about it on the sideline what do the Broncos decide to do?

THE EXACT SAME THING!!!!

Are you kidding me?

Did you not see what just happened?!?!?

The Jets still have nothing to lose! What makes you think something different is going to happen?!?!?

This time it’s worse!!!!

Now Ryp gets blasted while he throws and does take a dirty helmet-to-helmet hit! Insanity has just occurred. Of course, the Broncos offensive line has to get into it with the Jets. Of course, the Jets defense has to have some pride and get into it with the Broncos. Don’t forget, it was all handshakes and smiles two minutes previous. Now, the Broncos have a first down, take a knee and fortunately there’s not an immediate fight.

But, there are lots of words and good for the Broncos players, specifically Garett Bolles, for sticking up for their guy.

The COACHES created a VERY dangerous situation where there could’ve been injuries and suspensions, which would cost the players money, not the coaches.

It was a HORRIBLE display of sportsmanship and game management by both teams leaving the players in the middle having to fight the coaches petty battles. NFL players don¹t have to be taught to battle to the final minute. They aren’t in the NFL by accident. You don¹t become a tougher NFL team by playing hard all the way to the end of the clock. You play until the end of the game and the game was over with 1:03 left.

Period.

No discussion.

You don’t teach your team a lesson by calling timeouts. Also, you should always take the higher road. A win should be enough. Figuring how to throw the ball out of bounds with 13 seconds is impossible. Unless the other team just stands there, they have pride and it’s Gregg Williams who has a long reputation for dirty stuff.

Fangio then runs off the field encouraging his team to run with him. They more or less ignore him except for Bolles who was ready to fight the entire Jets team. But, if you watch closely, none of the other players paid attention to Fangio.

Why? Because – shocker – they are friends.

They went to school together. They train together. They played together.

It’s been a horrible 2020. This may be the only time all year they see each other. They DESERVE moments to mingle if they choose to. They deserve a moment to pray together if they choose to. Being waved off the field by their head coach because he screwed up the end of the game shouldn’t be paid attention to and it wasn’t.

Then, they get in the locker room. How about some game balls?!?!

Nope. Nothing.

Rypien for his first NFL win as a QB starter?

Jerry Jeudy first NFL TD?

What about Brandon McManus being clutch?

How about Bradley Chubb getting the huge sack to basically end the game?

Melvin Gordon with the TD?

Nope. Nothing.

SMH.

I’m thrilled for the players to get this W! I seriously don’t know what to say about the coaches except to say – Grow up!
