Should the Broncos pursue veteran offensive tackle Jason Peters?

May 13, 2020, 6:41 AM

Future Hall of Fame left tackle Jason Peters is available. The Broncos have been linked to the All-Pro.

James Palmer of the NFL Network joined “The Drive” with Tyler Polumbus and DMac on Tuesday and said, “Jets, Browns, Broncos and maybe the Chargers,” have shown interest in the nine-time Pro Bowler.

All four of those teams showed interest in the offseason in trying to find a left tackle to protect their quarterback. Denver failed to address the need in both free agency and the NFL Draft.

Palmer added, “The thing with most of these teams are, they wanna see what they have out there with guys competing and seeing where they stand and what they like or dislike about what they could potentially have at the left tackle position.”

If a team doesn’t like what they have, they could go ahead and reach back out to Peters to try and bring him in.

The Broncos also have a head start on the rest of the teams Palmer listed because the Broncos already know what they have at the left tackle position.

Why would the Broncos want to bring in the Super Bowl 52 champion? Well, the Broncos didn’t pick up the fifth-year option on Garett Bolles, their current left tackle, who has continued to lead the league in penalties on the offensive line. They’re willing to let Bolles battle it out with Elijah Wilkinson for the left tackle position. John Elway also thinks this team is ready to win right now.

Back in 2015, the Broncos were in need to improve along the offensive line and did just that right before the regular season started. Denver went out and signed All-Pro guard Evan Mathis to a one-year deal. It’s safe to say that I think Peyton Manning had something to do with that signing. Manning also tried getting Browns left tackle Joe Thomas to get traded to Denver that offseason.

The Browns were asking the Broncos to give up a second0round pick and unknown pass rusher Shaquil Barrett per sources. Denver refused to give up Barrett.

Palmer also said that teams ,”like Peters at a certain price.”

Peters could be looking at top market money for a left tackle, but with him being 38 years old, it’s unlikely he gets the money he wants despite him and his agent putting out workout videos on social media.

The nine-time Pro Bowler could possibly have to wait until training camp to sign with a team with a real need at left tackle. If he does get signed, it would more than likely be a one-year deal for less than $10 million.

If the Broncos think they can go all in this year and compete for a world championship, then this is a move they need to make. The only downfall is that Denver could be spending money for a rental at left tackle before having to look for another franchise left tackle in the next offseason.

Jason Peters will be valuable for a NFL team in 2020 if they want to make a deep playoff run. Peters only missed 3 games in the last two seasons. Denver could be that potential fit.
