Grading the Broncos top-three offseason acquisitions

Mar 19, 2020, 6:41 AM

The Broncos have made some interesting additions to their to roster this offseason. So let’s give a grade to what the Broncos have done so far.

***

A.J. Bouye – Denver knew they were going to lose Chris Harris Jr. in free agency after offering him a two-year deal back at the trade deadline that he turned down. The Broncos needed to fill that need at cornerback and John Elway understood who Vic Fangio wanted back in 2017. The Broncos sent the Jaguars a fourth-round pick to get a good player that fits the defense Fangio runs. The only question is which A.J. Bouye the Broncos will get. Will they get the elite corner from Houston or the average one from Jacksonville. There’s some uncertainty

Grade: B-

Graham Glasgow – For years, the Broncos have struggled on the offensive line and they need to find a way to protect their future franchise quarterback. Last offseason, Denver invested a ton of money in their right tackle and drafted a future Pro Bowler at left guard. Denver still had holes at left tackle, center and right guard, however. With the Patriots placing the franchise tag on guard Joe Thuney, the Broncos went after the best remaining guard available in Glasgow and they were able to bring him to Denver. Glasgow has played every position on the inside of the line, so he brings versatility if he needs to move positions. Glasgow is expected to play right guard and the Broncos have solved the right side of their offensive line and currently filled three-fifths of the positions across the offensive line.

Grade: A+

Jurrell Casey – Denver needed to solidify its defensive line. After they attempted to go after D.J. Reader, the Broncos found a blessing in disguise. Jurrell Casey has made the Pro Bowl in each of the last five seasons and with the Titans willing to move in from as a salary dump, Denver got great value by sending only a seventh-rounder back to Tennessee. Casey has a total of 30 sacks in his last five seasons. Not only is Casey a big body upfront to stop the run with Mike Purcell, the five-time Pro Bowler can get to the quarterback, as well. Casey had two sacks against Lamar Jackson in the divisional round as the Titans upset the Ravens. He shows up in the biggest games and is an upgrade over Derek Wolfe and Shelby Harris. Casey has three years left on his deal with no guaranteed money left. That’s a steal!
