Latest mock draft has Broncos replacing an offensive tackle

When it comes to needs in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Broncos are pretty easy to figure out. Denver is looking to upgrade at offensive tackle, wide receiver, middle linebacker and, depending on the next five weeks, quarterback.

So it should come as no surprise that the latest mock draft from CBS Sports has the Broncos taking a tackle with the No. 5 overall pick in April. What is a bit of a shock is the fact that they don’t forecast the top-five selection to necessarily replace much-maligned Garett Bolles.

Ryan Wilson has the Broncos taking Tristan Wirfs, the 6-foot-5, 322-pound tackle out of Iowa. His ability to play both the left and right side of the line is what the author thinks will bring another Hawkeye to Denver.

Garett Bolles has been a disappointment at left tackle, but Elijah Wilkinson has been more problematic on the other side. Wirfs can play both tackle positions, and assuming he declares for the draft, he’s a top-10 talent.

Whether he’d play the right or the left side doesn’t really matter. If Wirfs were to replace Wilkinson on the right side, that would still give the Broncos options in place of Bolles. Ja’Wuan James could move to the left side, as could Wilkinson. So simply having another offensive tackle on the roster would give Denver plenty of options.
