Cheers and Jeers: Arapahoe, Regis high schools need our support

CHEERS | Arapahoe and Regis high school hoops

Last year, in response to a community grieving over teen suicide, Arapahoe High School girls basketball coach Jerry Knafelc and Regis Jesuit girls basketball Carl Mattei organized a “foundation game” between the two schools to raise money and awareness about mental health and suicide.

Their effort brought in more than 2,000 people and raised $11,000, a feat noteworthy in itself.

But this weekend, the two schools will again meet up in a boys and girls doubleheader Saturday night to champion the same cause.

Doors at Arapahoe High School open at 5 p.m., with the games starting at 6 p.m. for the girls and 7:30 p.m. for the boys. The cost of admission is whatever someone is willing to donate.

JEERS | The Denver Broncos

This is a little bit of old news, but the Denver Broncos second-half collapse against the Minnesota Vikings was so historically bad it should be revisited.

It’s not so much the loss that’s bothersome. In fact, the Vikings have been one of the darlings of the NFL this season, heading into their Week 12 bye at 8-3, atop the NFC North along with the Green Bay Packers and poised for a postseason berth.

However, the fact that Minnesota became the first team down by 20 or more points at halftime to win the game in the past 100 games is hard to stomach.

Hopefully, that team dinner afterward in Denver wasn’t as difficult to swallow.

CHEERS | Buffs men’s basketball

The Denver Nuggets aren’t the only team doing work on the hardwood this season. Watch out for Colorado Buffaloes men’s hoops.

The Buffs, 3-0 to start the season, recently cracked the top 25 in the NCAA coaches poll and moved up two spots to No. 23 on the AP Top 25.

Moreover, ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas told the Denver Post the Buffaloes are “legit” are as “good as anybody” in the Pac-12.

Let’s hope Tad Boyle and the boys up in Boulder can keep things rolling.

JEERS | CSU Rams and CU Buffs football

Thank the heavens for Air Force football, because without the Falcons the Front Range would look even more desolate in terms of its collegiate gridiron outlook.

For the first time since World War II the CSU Rams and CU Buffaloes after 10 games sport 4-6 records. And if both teams don’t win their remaining two games, neither will earn a bowl bid in back-to-back seasons since 2011 and 2012.

It could be a while until the Front Range truly returns to the kind of football prominence seen in the 1990s.

CHEERS | Tim Tebow and Bronco

Cheers might not be the right sentiment, as it’s not necessarily a happy story, but it’s certainly one worth celebrating.

This week, former Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow posted a tribute to the “sweetest boy ever,” Bronco, a Rhodesian Ridgeback whom he had to put to sleep.

Whatever feelings you have about Tebow on or off the field, put them aside. His Instagram tribute to Bronco will punch you right in the feels.

So, from every dog’s human, thanks Tim for sharing your final moments with Bronco with the world.

JEERS | Vikings WR Stefon Diggs / Lizzo

OK, Boomer, this is a pop culture reference from today’s era of music. You have permission to tune out now if you’re so inclined.

So, Lizzo is fire, #AmIRight?! Forget that she’s nominated for a Grammy for a song that was released in 2017 (“Truth Hurts”). I’m not sure how it qualifies, but it does.

But, how has it taken so long for anyone to ask who is the “new man on the Minnesota Vikings,” as referenced in the song?

No worries, Stefon Diggs is on the case. He’s spending his bye week this week basking in the glow of a come-from-behind win over the Broncos last weekend by taking on such an important task.

Godspeed, Diggs, and be well on your journey to uncover the “Truth.”
