Cheers and Jeers: The undefeated Avs and ‘receiver’ Keenan Allen

CHEERS | The undefeated Avalanche

Since the Quebec Nordiques became the Colorado Avalanche in 1995, only one Avs squad has had a better start to a regular season (2013-’14) than this year’s team.

With a 4-2 come-from-behind win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday, Colorado moves to 3-0-0.

The Avs have scored in each of its first nine periods this season, a franchise first, and rookie Cale Makar equaled the organization’s longest point streak for a defenseman beginning his career.

If things keep up, things are surely going to be fun for fans of the burgundy and blue this season.

JEERS | Chargers “receiver” Keenan Allen

Let’s throw out some numbers that illustrate how “amazing” Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen played last week against the Broncos:

» 121 – The number of NFL receivers with more yards than Allen had against the Broncos

» 18 – The number of receiving yards Allen had against Denver, which is the second time he’s put up only 18 yards against the Broncos (2014)

» 5 – How many games Allen has had a weaker performance in terms of receiving yards (including a game against Kansas City last season in which he was targeted zero times)

» 7 – How many points the Broncos beat the Chargers by last week (exactly the same number of points for which the touchdown Allen didn’t catch would have counted)

Chris Harris Jr. can’t “carry his jock?” Bruh, quit while you’re really, really, really far behind.

CHEERS | Broncos “Fantennial”

This weekend should be quite the special one for Broncos Country.

On Wednesday, Denver Mayor Michael Hancock kicked things off by proclaiming that date “Pat Bowlen Day” in the city in honor of the late Broncos owner.

On Friday afternoon, the Broncos will celebrate not only the 100th year of the NFL but also the Ring of Fame induction of Champ Bailey with it’s “Fantennial” event at Mile high Sports Legends Mall.

The club will host its NFL 100 Youth Football Festival at Long Lake Regional Park in Arvada.

And on Sunday, the team will honor Bowlen and Bailey’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with several members of the Broncos Top 100 team.

There might not be a whole lot to cheer about this season for Denver, but this weekend will be.

JEERS | Richard Sherman

Do not take this as an endorsement for Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, but Richard Sherman is a clown.

For those who don’t know already (and those whose brains don’t already hurt), the San Francisco 49ers cornerback claimed his team’s 31-3 win over Cleveland last weekend was fueled by a handshake snub from the Browns quarterback.

But, it turns out, the whole thing was a lie, as ESPN obtained video of Mayfield and Sherman shaking hands at midfield before the game.

Sherman said he would apologize to Mayfield not after trying to excuse his actions by saying, “Sometimes you remember things a little differently than it happened. Obviously, it still motivated me the same way.”

As for what Sherman should do moving forward, see the advice above for Keenan Allen.

CHEERS | Comcast

The consternation among Nuggets and Avalanche fans about the stalemate between flagship broadcaster Altitude TV and Comcast, Dish Network and DirecTV is palpable.

At this point, fans haven’t been able to watch the Avs get off to a 3-0-0 start and perhaps won’t be able to see the Nuggets season opener later this month.

But at least one part involved — Comcast — is appeasing fans (or trying to).

The cable TV provider, reports the Denver Post, will apply a partial credit to customers’ Regional Network Fee.

The price is unknown, as it varies depending on the customer’s location and service area, and it won’t alleviate the sting of being blacked out, but it ain’t nothing.

JEERS | Snow

Look, I get it. Colorado’s weather is unpredictable. Or some other word stronger than unpredictable.

But going from 80-degree weather to freezing, middle-of-winter snow storm crosses the line.

Come on, Mother Nature. You’re better than this.
