Cheers and Jeers: The Rockies brightest, and lowest, points in 2019

Aug 23, 2019, 7:28 AM

There hasn’t been a lot to cheer about with the Colorado Rockies in 2019, with high expectations yielding to familiar results. But this week provided some levity to the bleak season.

This week also unveiled perhaps one of the lowest points in the club’s history as well.

Here’s the best and worst of Denver sports this week:

Cheers | Rockies starter Tim Melville

In the bleakness that has become the Colorado Rockies season, Tim Melville has provided some levity.

The club tapped the 29-year-old right hander not only to fill the roster spot left by placing Jon Gray on the 60-day injured list — ending his season — but he made a start for Colorado on Wednesday. And in that start, he provided not only one of the best performances for the Rockies in 2019 (one earned run in seven innings) but he earned his first career win in his best career outing.

Oh, and he notched his first career hit and first two career RBIs.

Not bad for a guy who kicked around the minor leagues for much of his 11-year career and spent his offseason working at a barbecue join just 12 miles from Chase Field, where he made his 2019 debut.

Jeers | The Coors Field usher who shut down a lesbian couple kissing

Shame on the Rockies employee who, on Sunday reports the Denver Post, instructed a lesbian couple they could not kiss in the stands during Colorado’s tilt with the Miami Marlins.

Jaelyn Coates and her partner shared what she described on Twitter as a “casual kiss,” after which a Coors Field usher named Karen told them the stadium prohibits strong displays of public affection.

How dare they besmirch the family values-oriented ballpark by doing what heterosexual couples are goaded into doing for entertainment between innings (the “Kiss Cam”).

The club has since apologized and rectified the wrongdoing by inviting Coates and her partner back as a guest for a future game. But how this still remains a part of our culture befuddles.

Cheers | Cecil Lammey’s Fantasy Draft Part on Sunday

If you’re coming anywhere close to fantasy football this season, you need to be at Blake Street Tavern on Sunday for Cecil Lammey’s Fantasy Draft Party.

The Fan’s own fantasy guru will answer questions and provide tips from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and then leagues can hold their drafts until 7:00 p.m.

It’s a can’t-miss event if you want to dominate your fantasy football league this season. Check out more information and get tickets by clicking here.

Jeers | The NFL for its Canadian fiasco Thursday

For a league that made $16 billion in revenue in 2018, you’d think they’d be able to ensure a game — even a preseason game — was being played in adequate conditions.

But, no. A hole in the freaking end zone during the Oakland Raiders-Green Bay Packers matchup in Winnipeg, Canada, forced the two teams to play on a shortened, 80-yard field.

This comes on the heels of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game being canceled due to poor field conditions in August 2016 due to “congealing and rubberized” field paint.

This should not happen with perhaps the world’s biggest professional sports organization. Come on.
