To draft, or not draft, a QB: Broncos decision will speak volumes

In just more than a week, the Denver Broncos actions during the NFL Draft — whether they take a quarterback or not — will speak volumes about how the franchise perceives itself moving forward.

If Denver isn’t convinced its newly-acquired veteran quarterback Joe Flacco is a “long-term solution,” then “it actually makes sense” to draft a quarterback, said “The Drive” co-host DMac on Tuesday.

However, if the Broncos are “truly all in,” DMac said, Flacco can rest easy knowing he could be in Denver for a while.

“Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth said on Tuesday he doesn’t believe there’s a “generational” type talent at the quarterback position in this year’s draft, so he wouldn’t necessarily pick one at No. 10 if he were the Broncos.

“But if the organization is sold, I’m OK if that’s what they think,” Schlereth said.

However, Schlereth said there’s “never anything wrong with taking a really good football player, even if that player happens to play quarterback.”

“If you’ve got a guy in the second or third round or fourth round that you think is a really good football player that’s going to help your team down the road at that position, then there is nothing wrong with it,” Schlereth said.

But either way, quarterback in the draft or not, Flacco said on Tuesday he doesn’t really care.

“I want to get this team to be the best it is with me at the quarterback position. Obviously, that is not of most importance to draft a quarterback. But if we do, that’s completely out of my control,” Flacco said.

“I’m going to go out here and I’m going to compete and he’s going to have to come out here and be on the field with me every day, too. I’m all ready for that.”
