Schlereth: Broncos passing game can’t hold up to heavy workload

Oct 10, 2018, 11:23 AM

If the Denver Broncos rely heavily on its passing game, “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth said on Wednesday they are “not going to win a whole lot of games.”

Against the New York Jets on Sunday, quarterback Case Keenum threw the ball 51 times, completing 35 for 377 yards with two touchdowns. Yet Denver lost 34-16.

“If you let Case Keenum throw it 51 times, you’re not going to win a whole lot of games,” Schlereth said. “And it’s not that Case Keenum can’t throw it 51 times. It’s that your passing game can’t hold up 51 times.”

On the day, the Jets racked up seven quarterback hits and four sacks, including two from defensive lineman Leonard Williams, who told the New York Daily News that Keenum looked “uncomfortable” and “scared.”

“Last week, four sacks, multiple pressures, multiple hits, led to a defensive lineman that said you looked scared at quarterback,” Schlereth said. “Your passing game cannot hold up. Sorry.”

Keenum, specifically, has never won a game when throwing more than 50 passes and has only two wins when throwing 40 or more.
