Clough: Victory in Philly tied to Broncos winning turnover battle

Nov 3, 2017, 12:00 AM | Updated: 7:49 am

Just once in seven games this season have the Denver Broncos taken away the ball from its opponent more than given it away — a win in Week 4 against the Oakland Raiders.

That day Denver not only succeeded in not turning over the ball at all but also extended its franchise-record winning streak when winning the turnover battle to 31 games.

In the Broncos two other wins in 2017, the team pushed in terms of takeaway differential with the Dallas Cowboys, 2-2, and was just minus-1 against the Los Angeles Chargers in the regular season opener.

In all four of the other games this season, the Broncos committed two or more turnovers more than their opponents, which concluded in losses in each game.

The pattern, as Sandy Clough argued on Thursday, is win the turnover battle and you win the game.

“When the Broncos don’t turn the ball over at all, there’s a pretty good chance they’ll win the turnover battle. And they have (won) 31 times in a row when they have won the turnover battle,” Clough said. “That hasn’t happened very much in the last year or so.”
