Schefter: ‘Logical’ for Broncos to consider switch at quarterback

After a nightmare performance from Trevor Siemian on Halloween Eve in Arrowhead Stadium, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter said it’s “logical” for the Broncos to consider a change at the quarterback position.

Schefter reported early Monday that the Broncos were consider sitting down Siemian for what would likely be 2016 first-round draft pick Paxton Lynch.

Joining “Schlereth & Evans” on Monday, Schefter said it’s “common sense” for Denver to at least consider a change following Siemian’s subpar performance in a 29-19 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football. Siemian had just 198 yards on 19-of-36 passing for a touchdown, three interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 43.5.

And should the Broncos make a move under center, Schefter said he got the sense that Lynch, not veteran backup Brock Osweiler, would receive “strong consideration” as a replacement.

“At some point this season they’re going to have to figure out whether or not Paxton Lynch can play here,” Schefter said. “You’ve invested a first-round pick. Trevor Siemian, it looks like his confidence is shot. It looks like he’s struggling to make plays.

“It looks like for whatever reason the offense has stopped functioning, they’re turning over the football way too much, and you’re in a position now where you’re going to talk about doing something at that position.”

After Monday’s game, head coach Vance Joseph said he had not considered putting Osweiler in at halftime despite Siemian’s and the Broncos offensive woes.

“I stayed with Trevor because he is our guy. I mean he has worked all week so that was my decision to stay with him,” Joseph said. He later added that he wasn’t sure about Siemian’s confidence level, but that he was not worried and the young quarterback would “bounce back.”

However, Joseph hinted that a possible move could be imminent, saying he wasn’t sure if a chance could come at the quarterback position after the team digests the game film.

“I am not sure, but losing three games in a row and having five turnovers tonight, anything is possible,” Joseph said.

Monday night’s loss, the Broncos third since a Week 5 bye, drops Denver to 3-4 on the season, snapping the longest active streak of games without a losing record (80) in the NFL.

In those three games, Siemian’s averaged just 24 completions on 40 attempts per game and has thrown six interceptions to just two touchdowns while being sacks 12 times.

Lynch returned to practice last week for the first time since the preseason when he injured his throwing shoulder. The first-round quarterback was inactive Monday against Kansas City in lieu of Osweiler, whom the team re-acquired at the end of training camp.
