Broncos QB Lynch to undergo MRI on shoulder, x-rays negative

Aug 27, 2017, 12:34 AM

After patrolling the sidelines for the first half Saturday, quarterback Paxton Lynch exited the Denver Broncos preseason dress rehearsal after two plays with a bruised shoulder.

During his only playing time against the Green Bay Packers, Lynch threw for 9 yards on 1-of-2 passing and scrambled for 15 yards as Denver drove down for a field goal.

Lynch headed for the locker room after the series with what head coach Vance Joseph revealed was a bruised shoulder.

After the game, Joseph said Lynch would undergo an MRI on Sunday “just to confirm what we think it is today.”

Sunday will be a big day in the evaluation of Lynch’s injury and to what extent his shoulder may have been damaged, but the initial tests came back positive on the young quarterback.

“The X-rays were negative, but we’re going to get an MRI tomorrow to kind of confirm what we saw tonight. The initial x-rays were negative for any bone issues,” Joseph said.

The club’s first-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft did not win the starting job and exits this preseason as the clear backup.

However, Joseph said after the game that the second-year pro would still be the primary backup to starter Trevor Siemian.

“It’s a minor injury as we know now. Moving forward if it’s something different we can discuss that,” Joseph said of the depth at the quarterback position.

“Right now, nothing’s changed. Trevor’s one and Paxton’s two.”

The Broncos quarterback situation is one that could be a cause for concern as the season wears on. Siemian won the job, but he’s had an injury each year he’s played dating back to his college days at Northwestern.

With his injury history, Denver better be ready in case of emergency.

While third-string quarterback Kyle Sloter has been impressive this preseason, Joseph said that he’s strictly at the end of the depth chart.

“He stands where he’s standing, he’s our third right now,” Joseph said.
