John Elway’s accolades are numerous as they are apparent –– two-time Super Bowl champion, first-ballot Hall of Famer and member of the 1990s All-Decade Team in the.
However, his recent appointment to the NFL Competition Committee indicates the respect Elway has garnered in his time in the front office for the Broncos from his colleagues around the league, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter told “Schlereth and Evans” Thursday.
Cardinals’ HC Bruce Arians and Broncos’ GM John Elway are being added to NFL’s prestigious competition committee, per league sources.

“That’s a pretty prestigious appointment and a pretty prestigious committee. They oversee the game. They come up with all the rules. They recommend changes. They’re in charge of an awful lot,” Schefter said. “It is, to me, a very important position, and the fact that John Elway is appointed to it and Bruce Arians is appointed to it speaks to the type of football men that they are and the respect that they’ve garnered around the league.”
Arians, the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, was also appointed to the committee, along with former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin, Schefter reported.
Along with John Elway and Bruce Arians, former NYG HC Tom Coughlin also has been added to NFL’s competition committee, per source.

Elway, who joined the Broncos from office in January 2011 following a 4-12 season, has engineered a streak of success that includes 64 total wins (second most in that timeframe), five consecutive AFC West Division titles, and two Super Bowl appearances (with a win in Super Bowl 50).
“Obviously John Elway had a boatload of respect as a player, but it shows you the respect level that the league has and the ownership has for John Elway as a general manager and what he’s done,” said “Schlereth and Evans” co-host, and Elway’s former teammate, Mark Schlereth.
However, both Schlereth and his co-host Mike Evans believe the general manager and executive vice president stops won’t be the last for Elway, saying they believe he could end up being an NFL owner some day.
“The only think I keep thinking is that he progresses and eventually becomes an owner of a franchise in this league,” said Schlereth, who called Elway one of the fiercest competitors he’s ever know.
“His football life still has a good 10-15 years in it. I don’t see him being a general manager that entire time,” Evans said.
