Sanchez, Siemian named co-starters on Broncos depth chart

Will it be veteran Mark Sanchez at starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos or second-year gunslinger Trevor Siemian?

Well, for now, it’s both.

The Broncos dropped its first depth of the season ahead of preseason Game 1 on Thursday against the Chicago Bears, and still there’s no leader in quarterback competition.

Both Sanchez and Siemian sit as co-starters.

“Schlereth and Evans” host Mike Evans said this is the first time he’s seen two players listed with the first-team, as opposed to a No. 1 and No. 2 at a position.

“This is a ‘slash’ depth chart, where you have a number of positions where it’s not first-team, second-team, it’s two guys who share the first team,” Evans said.

Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan’s football insider Cecil Lammey said this is Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak’s way of appeasing both quarterbacks while still leaving room for future evaluation.

“As far as the quarterback goes, leave it to Gary Kubiak to play this quarterback role and quarterback angle like a fiddle,” Lammey said. “That’s exactly what he’s doing because both guys get to feel good. Like, ‘I’m the first team guy. Forget the slash. I’m the guy.’ That’s playing the depth chart like a fiddle.”

And quarterback isn’t the only position where a “slash.” Ty Sambrailo and Michael Schofield are both ranked at No. 1 right guard. The same goes for Jeff Heuerman and Virgil Green at No. 1 tight end.

Rookie quarterback Paxton Lynch, Denver’s first-round draft pick, remains running with the No. 3s.
