The Broncos coaching staff isn’t living up to the hype

An 0-2 start to the season is bad enough. What makes it even more discouraging is it puts a severe dent in the belief (myth?) in this Broncos’ coaching staff.

Vic Fangio was supposed to transform the defense into a marauding juggernaut like the one he left in Chicago. Mike Munchak was supposed to singlehandedly elevate the play of the offensive line and rescue the floundering career of Garrett Bolles. Rich Scangarello was supposed to pump energy into the lifeless offense with his new-age McVay/Shanahan (Kyle) influenced concepts and creativity.

So far, this coaching staff has been a big disappointment.

Fangio’s defense is the only one in the NFL without a forced turnover or a sack. How is that possible? Where is Von Miller?

The Broncos o-line is still getting pushed around and Bolles has hit such rock bottom that Mark Schlereth and Tom Nalen can’t say his name and the crowd at Mile High on Sunday did something I’ve never heard before and that is shower an offensive lineman with boos after yet another “Holding….#72….offense” announcement.

Oh, and “Wrinkles” (Scangarello) has constructed a game plan that is averaging a whopping 15.0 points per game.

Were we sold a bogus bill of goods when it came to this coaching staff? The answer is yes, but only if you bought into the idea this team was only good coaching away from going from six wins to 10.

I’ve long been accused of saying coaching doesn’t matter. That has always been a misrepresentation of what I believe. I’ve said it a thousand times before on air and I’ll write it here: Coaching matters, but players matter more.

I get it. The Broncos are 16-30 in their last 46 games. It’s much easier to think it’s all been Gary Kubiak and Vance Joseph’s fault than admitting John Elway and his cronies have made personnel mistakes galore to put the Broncos in this predicament. It’s more encouraging to think simply swapping out the coaching staff and bringing in Fangio, Munchak and Scangarello will be the magic elixir rather than the harsh reality the Broncos are facing a serious rebuild that could take both a major front-office shake-up and a lot of time and patience.

I believe the Broncos have good coaching and that coaching will make a difference. But not until the Broncos talent dramatically improves.
