Game notes

» By far more, the Denver Broncos most common preseason opponent has been the San Francisco 49ers, as the two teams have matched up 40 times.

» Denver will appear on “Monday Night Football” during the preseason for the first time since 2007 and the 16th time overall (6-9).

» The Broncos and 49ers will hold joint practices Friday and Saturday, the fourth time the two teams have come together in the preseason during the past five seasons.

» The two teams will combine to form a mini Iowa Hawkeyes reunion as Broncos tight end Noah Fant and linebacker Josey Jewell played together in college with 49ers tight end George Kittle and quarterback C.J. Beathard.

» Several members of Denver’s coaching staff and roster spent time with San Francisco, including head coach Vic Fangio (2011-’14 as defensive coordinator), defensive coordinator Ed Donatell (2011-’14 as defensive backs coach), offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello (2017-’18 as quarterbacks coach), quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney (2015, 2017-’18 as an offensive assistant), linebacker Dekoda Watson (2017-’18) and defensive lineman Mike Purcell (2014-’16).

» Scangarello coached under 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan with the Atlanta Falcons (2015) as well as San Francisco the past two seasons.

» McCartney served as part of the Cleveland Browns’ coaching staff under Shanahan in 2014.

» San Francisco running backs coach Bobby Turner spent 15 seasons with Denver (1995-2009) and 49ers defensive backs/passing game coordinator Joe Woods spent four seasons with the Broncos, including the past two as defensive coordinator.

» San Francisco center Ben Garland, a Grand Junction native and former Air Force Academy standout, spent several seasons in Denver, playing in eight games in 2014, serving as the team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee that season as well.
