The clues about Trevor Story’s status aren’t positive

Jun 20, 2019, 11:50 AM

While everyone holds their breath and hopes for good news on the Trevor Story injury front, early indications are that the All-Star shortstop’s jammed thumb could be more serious than originally thought. He hurt himself sliding into second base during the Rockies win over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night.

X-rays after the game were negative, which is a good sign. But as Nick Groke from The Athletic pointed out, the season-ending UCL injury that Story suffered in August 2016 also produced a negative X-ray; today’s MRI will be more revealing.

Until those results are known, however, reading between the lines becomes the only way to guess what’s going on with Story. And right now, the early signs aren’t good.

Not being in the lineup today isn’t a shock; Story could be fine and he’d still get a day off for precautionary reasons. But Brendan Rodgers rejoining the club in Arizona is troubling.

The Rockies top prospect was recently sent back down to Albuquerque, as his playing time had diminished due to Ryan McMahon’s strong play and the infielder’s struggles. But if Colorado has him ready for another call-up from triple-A, they’re preparing for life without Story, at least for awhile.

Rodgers is back on the roster if Story is headed to the injured list, which appears to be where things are heading.
