Should the Broncos consider bringing back David Williams?

May 10, 2019, 3:28 PM

The Denver Broncos open up rookie minicamp this weekend, and they will have 47 players working out at UCHealth Training Center.

Maybe they should have 48.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports the Jacksonville Jaguars have waived running back David Williams, whom the Broncos selected coming out of Arkansas in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Williams failed to make the 53-man roster last season, but the Broncos did find a spot for him on the practice squad. He lasted about a month before the Jaguars stole him away and put him on their active roster.

Used sparingly by the Jaguars, Williams played in only six games, rushing the ball eight times for 36 yards.

If the Broncos lured Williams back to Denver, he would give them one thing they could use more of in their backfield: size. He measures in at 229 pounds and would be the biggest running back on the roster.

I was surprised last year when the Broncos selected Williams, and not Phillip Lindsay, in the seventh round. While Lindsay was my No. 10 running back in 2018, Williams landed as my No. 60 ball carrier. It was certainly a deep pull for the Broncos scouting staff, which must have liked Williams.

He’s a big man, but he does have light feet. Last year, Williams credited his mother, who was a dancer, for his footwork and why he’s always been able to move so fluidly for a large back.

Williams might not make the team if the Broncos bring him back, but it’s something worth considering, especially since they don’t have a lot of size in the backfield other than Royce Freeman and Devontae Booker.

With Lindsay still recovering from a wrist injury, the Broncos will be a bit short-handed during minicamp and OTAs. Adding Williams would give them another body and, who knows, maybe this year he’d make the 53-man roster.
