Schlereth: Broncos should draft ‘generational player,’ regardless of position

With all the speculation and theorizing on what position the Denver Broncos should take leading up to this month’s NFL Draft, Mark Schlereth boiled it down to a simple equation on what the team should do at No. 10.

“I’d take a player that you think is a generational player, anywhere on the board, regardless of position, if that’s who you think he is,” the “Schlereth and Evans” co-host said this week.

Schlereth said that teams who operate as if there are certain position groups not worthy of a pick in the top-10 — like offensive line or tight end — are “stupid.”

“You can’t take one of the greatest players in the draft or the best player in the draft, you can’t take the best college player on the planet in the top five because of the position he plays, especially in this day and age where the college game doesn’t produce offensive linemen?” Schlereth said.

At tight end, for example, Schlereth said not a lot of past top-10 picks at the position have produced at that level in the NFL — Kellen Winslow Jr, Eric Ebron, etc. — but it would make sense to take Rob Gronkowski at No. 10 because “he changed the way we look at that position.”

“I’m just saying if you find a guy, regardless of position, who you think is a generational player, if you want to take him at No. 1-overall that doesn’t bother me,” Schlereth said.
