How long will the leash be for Broncos head coach Vic Fangio in 2019?

With Denver Broncos earning some kudos for their offseason thus far, especially in the hiring of Vic Fangio and his staff, comes the pressure seeing results come the regular season this fall.

On Tuesday, “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mike Evans said that Fangio will feel the pressure to improve upon back-to-back losing seasons, so much so that the Broncos new head coach could have a short leash when it comes to his employment.

“I think he’d better deliver this first year. If he delivers a Vance Joseph-type 5-11 or 6-10 record, then how can you possibly say he’d be safe?” Evans said. “There is pressure on Vic Fangio. He has to win. Barring catastrophic injuries, he has to win a minimum of nine games this year. Or he could be out of a job.”

Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan’s Orlando Franklin also argued that Fangio could be on the way out with a sub-.500 season but said that 8-8 would be sufficient for him to keep his head coaching title.

“Everything is just lining up with the coaching staff and who you’re trading for and the guys you’re bringing in with free agency. So, if Vic Fangio doesn’t go out there this year and win at least eight games …” Franklin said. “Because we can’t handle having another losing season. I mean, I don’t know what will happen in this city if that happens.

“So, if we can’t turn it around with the moves that we have made and be at least 8-8, Vic Fangio won’t be here past this year.”

Evans’ co-host, Mark Schlereth, however, said he believes Fangio will have a longer rope when it comes to the 2019 season, saying a failure like a 5-11 or 6-10 season would point to “personnel issues” more than the head coach’s performance.
