DL Zach Kerr says re-signing with Denver Broncos just ‘made sense’

Defensive lineman Zach Kerr said on Saturday a number of factors played into him re-signing with the Denver Broncos — from playing with teammates like Derek Wolfe, Shelby Harris, and Von Miller to staying in a community he’s been so involved with to learning under defensive line coach Bill Kollar.

But, ultimately, it just “made sense” for the sixth-year NFL defender to stay in orange and blue, he said.

“I had a couple of other teams — a couple of AFC North teams, some NFC West teams, and another NFC team. It was like three or four teams that were interested at all around the same thing,” Kerr said during a conference call on Saturday. “It just kind of made sense for me to stay here from a football standpoint, financial standpoint, and my family as well.”

The Broncos agreed on a two-year deal with Kerr, who came to Denver in the 2017 offseason after spending three years with the Indianapolis Colts.

New head coach Vic Fangio too played a part in Kerr’s return to Denver, as he said he believes the club is “building something really good here.”

“I feel like Vic is the guy to kind of take us over that hump, take us over the hill,” Kerr said. “I just want to be a part of it.”

Among the characteristics that Kerr likes in Fangio is he believes the first-time head coach will hold the team “accountable.”

“Not saying there wasn’t accountability in the past, but having a coach like him that is kind of old school and with his coaching style as tenacious as he is, I think it’s going to be a good fit for us and the guys in the locker room,” Kerr said. “I’m excited to see what he does.”

Appearing in 27 games (one start) for the Broncos over the past two seasons, Kerr racked up 52 tackles, two sacks, and two passes defensed. He appeared in a career-high 16 games for the club last season.
