With Flacco for Keenum, have Broncos traded one ‘Band-Aid’ for another?

Feb 14, 2019, 7:40 PM

As the news of the Broncos agreeing in principle with the Baltimore Ravens on a trade to send Joe Flacco to Denver, “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard lauded the move, calling it the removal of the “Band-Aid” that was Case Keenum.

“They ripped off that Band-Aid, didn’t they? Case Keenum, I’m sorry, but you were a Band-Aid,” Pritchard said. “And I said that when Vic Fangio had that great interview with Woody Paige and Vic Fangio talked about Band-Aids around here. We can no longer go that route. Rip that thing off.”

In an interview with The Gazette over the weekend, the newly-hired Broncos head coach said Denver needs to make “good choices for the future, not just for today.”

But Pritchard also questioned whether Flacco, too, might also be a Band-Aid for the Broncos.

“Is Flacco a Band-Aid? I’ll put that out there because we don’t know what it’s going to look like,” Pritchard said. “I mean, why is this such a humungous or monumental upgrade over Case Keenum?”

Later Thursday, 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough said he doesn’t believe Flacco is some “hidden jewel” that the Ravens screwed up over the past few seasons.

“In my humble opinion, the Broncos are delusional if they believe that they’re getting anything remotely resembling the Joe Flacco of six years ago,” Clough said.

Statistically speaking, Flacco and Keenum have relatively similar numbers over each of their respective careers.

Per game, Flacco has a slight lead over Keenum in terms of passing yards (234.6 to 22.1) and touchdown passes (1.3 to 1.1). Keenum holds leads in interceptions (0.7 to 0.8), sacks (1.8 to 2.0) and completion percentage (62.0 to 61.7).
