Lammey: Broncos new coach Fangio the buzz around Shrine Game Day 1

My favorite time of year is here. That’s right, once again I’m on the road for what I call the “All-Star Road Trip.”

For the 14th year in a row, I’m attending the East-West Shrine Game with an eye on some of the talent entering the 2019 NFL draft.

The first day of practice featured quite a few players that teams like the Broncos should be interested in.

Here’s my report:

The Best QB here

The eyes always wonder to the quarterback, and I think Brett Rypien from Boise State did the best job today.

Rypien, the nephew of former Washington Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien, has a strong arm but also showed the ability to throw with touch on deep passes.

He and Easton Stick (North Dakota State) are the best quarterbacks here and both are intriguing mid-to-late-round prospects.

Catch me if you can

I saw quite a few good receivers at Tropicana Field on Monday. The best of the bunch might have been Terry Godwin II from the University of Georgia.

He had no trouble getting open, showing good quickness and speed after the catch.

Players like Cody Thompson (Toledo) and Jon Duhart (Old Dominion) caught the attention of scouts in attendance.

Broncos buzz

With new head coaching hire Vic Fangio, the buzz about the Denver Broncos is high in Tampa. Scouts are excited about the hire and feel like he can make the Broncos defense elite.

One scout told me on Monday, “As good as Von Miller has been, he’s going to be better than ever with Fangio.” Another scout commented, “The Broncos might have hired the best head coaching prospect out there.”

Certainly, Fangio’s name and reputation command a lot of respect.

Check back for more from Tampa tomorrow.

Correction: The story has been altered to reflect that Brett Rypien is the nephew of former Washington Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien.
