Heading into Tuesday’s Fan War Room, “Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley said of the two frontrunners for the Denver Broncos head coaching job that he had been leaning toward Mike Munchak over Vic Fangio.
But upon further review, taking into account the potential importance of meshing with Gary Kubiak, who could make his way back to the sidelines this season, Stokley said his money is on Fangio getting the job.
“The more we talk about it, the more I think about who’s going to be most receptive to Gary Kubiak. That’s what it comes down to for me,” Stokley said. “And that’s your answer. That’s Vic Fangio.”
“Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Mike Pritchard agreed with Stokley assessment, saying in hiring Fangio and pairing him with Kubiak the Broncos tick off one of the coaching attributes sought out by general manager John Elway: expertise on the coach’s given side of the football.
“I want them to be great on one side of the ball and great at what they do — whatever that position that may be — whether it be a coordinator or whatever they’ve done,” Elway said last week. “I look for greatness on that side.”
Including this season’s top-ranked defense with the Chicago Bears, Fangio has a strong track record in terms of his units as a defensive coordinator.
In 19 seasons with several different NFL teams, Fangio’s defenses have ranked in the top 10 in yards given up and points against eight times.
