Lammey: No more excuses, ‘Case Keenum needs to play better’

Plenty of blame for the anemic Denver Broncos offense of late has been spread around — from head coach Vance Joseph to offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave to quarterback Case Keenum.

But on Wednesday, “Pritchard and Cecil” co-host Cecil Lammey said he keeps hearing excuses from Broncos Country for Keenum’s play, and they all need to stop.

“Case Keenum needs to be better. This isn’t about making excuses for his play. His play hasn’t been good enough. And he should know better as a veteran quarterback,” Lammey said.

Keenum pointed the finger at himself on Tuesday for the lack of offensive production.

“I take it on myself that I’ve got to do better,” Keenum said. “I’ve got to play better, I’ve got to give my guys chances down the field, and that’s it.”

After throwing 10 interceptions in his first eight games of the season, Keenum has none during the past five games. However, his yards per game have dropped from 263.8 to 205.8.

On Monday, Joseph called for Keenum to be “more aggressive” down the field instead of worrying about making mistakes.

“In my opinion, being safe with the ball allows you to have great numbers in that category, but as far as making plays on the field, you can’t be safe doing that,” Joseph said. “He’s got to take more chances down the middle of the field, and he will tell you that.”

Keenum did, saying on Tuesday that he “can’t get caught back there with the ball” in his hands.

“I think being smart with the ball, continuing to be smart with the ball, but giving guys chances when we feel like it’s a good matchup or advantageous time to take a shot or take a chance down the field.”
