Pump the brakes on a Heuerman extension, says ‘Stokley and Zach’

“The Drive” co-hosts Alfred “Big Al” Williams and DMac said on Thursday that the Denver Broncos should lock up Jeff Heuerman long term after the tight end’s best career game two weeks ago against the Houston Texans heading into the bye week.

“I think Heuerman is a lot better than we thought he was going to be. He’s grown up. And I think that the Broncos should probably snatch him up and make sure he’s here for a long time,” Williams said, adding he’d give him a four-year deal “no problem.”

On Friday, “Stokley and Zach” co-hosts Brandon Stokley and Zach Bye offered some advice to Williams and DMac: Slow your roll.

“He had more receptions a week ago than he did in either of his first two seasons. And I’ve got to give it to Jeff Heuerman. He has been a delight to watch here in recent weeks, especially last week. But let’s not get crazy,” Bye said.

Against the Texans in Week 9, Heuerman had a career-high 10 receptions for 83 yards. In the eight games before that, he had 15 combined, and in each of his first two seasons playing he had nine total.

“Look, he’s played good football this year. I’ve liked what I’ve seen from Jeff Heuerman. And he played great football against the Houston Texans,” Stokley said. “But, I want to see how the rest of the season plays out, and then we’ll evaluate that at the end of the season.”

Heuerman, who missed his entire rookie season with an ACL injury, has his rookie contract expire at the end of this season, at which time he’ll be an unrestricted free agent.

For Broncos general manager George Paton, the draft able answer to the Broncos’ quarterback quandary doesn’t have to come in the first round. “I do think it is a good quarterback class. There’s seven, eight quarterbacks that we like that (we) think can play in the league one day,” Paton said during a pre-draft press […]
