DMac: With value higher, Broncos should have traded Sanders, not DT

Nov 6, 2018, 8:23 PM

Denver Broncos general manager John Elway made the right decision in trading away a wide receiver last week, just the wrong receiver according to “The Drive” co-host DMac.

On Tuesday, DMac said because Elway “wants to win now” instead of realizing the Broncos are in a rebuilding mode, he trade away the aging Demaryius Thomas to the Houston Texans instead of someone with more value.

“If we’re selling to make the most value and Von is untouchable … the next most valuable guy, clearly, is Emmanuel Sanders,” DMac said. “If you got a fourth-round pick for D.T., you could certainly get a third-round pick for Emmanuel, maybe even a second-round pick.

“If you’re in a rebuild mode you need as much capital as you can possibly get, and the value between third-round guys and fourth-round guys is pretty significant.”

DMac’s co-host, Alfred “Big Al” Williams, agreed on valuing Sanders over Thomas.

“Since Emmanuel Sanders has been here, I think he’s been the best receiver,” Williams said. “Even though Demaryius Thomas is a bigger body and has come up with some nice catches, I’ve always believed that Emmanuel Sanders was the better of the two receivers.”

DMac commended Elway for his “competitive spirit,” but said it ultimately hurts him as a general manager.

“John Elway always wants to win, and he always wants to win now,” DMac said. “It’s a great quality, but it’s the quality that hinders him the most as a general manager.”
