Despite Chubb’s strong start, Stokley regrets Broncos not taking QB

Nov 1, 2018, 2:14 PM

Fresh off of his defensive rookie of the month honors, Denver Broncos linebacker Bradley Chubb appears to be the “generational” player that was expected from him, said Zach Bye on Thursday.

Through his first eight games in the NFL, Chubb has seven sacks, six tackles for loss, 10 quarterback hits, a pass defensed, and a forced fumble.

“Bradley Chubb, rookie of the month on the defensive side of the ball. Bradley Chubb has fulfilled the projection that you think a generational rookie would look like,” the “Stokley and Zach” co-host said.

But Bye’s co-host, Brandon Stokley, said on Thursday he still has a tinge of regret that the Broncos took Chubb instead of a young quarterback with the fifth-overall pick in the NFL Draft.

“I still have a little bit of a regret that there is no young quarterback that we drafted at No. 5. And that’s no knock against Bradley Chubb at all,” Stokley said. “I just want to be able to sit here and feel like we have hope for the future when it comes to the quarterback position. Because I’m looking at our situation now and what are we going to do?”

Of the five quarterbacks who went in the first round of the NFL draft this offseason, three of them were selected behind Chubb at No. 5 — Josh Allen at No. 7, Josh Rosen at No. 10, and Lamar Jackson at No. 32.

“I wanted a quarterback. At 5-11, I said let’s go get us a quarterback. I want hope. I didn’t go 5-11 to get an offensive lineman or a wide receiver,” Stokley said. “… That’s not why I went 5-11 last year. That’s not why I suffered through that. I had my eyes on hope for the future, and hope means quarterback. So, I wanted a quarterback.”
