Schlereth’s keys to Broncos win: Keep KC on sidelines, unleash Von

Ahead of the Denver Broncos hosting the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football, “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth spelled out the keys to an orange and blue victory:

Broncos need to possess the ball

Schlereth reiterated his point that the Broncos cannot afford to get into a shootout type of game with the Chiefs and expect to win.

“I’ve never believed that you’re going to get in a shootout with Kansas City and you’re going to win a shootout because I just think they have too many doggone weapons to get in a shootout,” Schlereth said.

Instead, Denver needs to “possess the ball,” “put long drives together” and take care of the football.

“The best place you can keep this dynamic Kansas City offense is sitting on the sideline feel like they’re pressured,” Schlereth said. “Get them down to 10 possessions. The average game is 12-13 possessions.

“Get them down to nine or 10 then you’ve got a great shot offensively of coming away with a victory.”

Covering Chiefs explosive weapons on offense

The Chiefs have a plethora of weapons on offense, but Schlereth said it mostly comes down to covering tight end Travis Kelce and “fast man on the planet” Tyreek Hill.

Shutting down Kelce is exactly the reason why the Broncos went with Justin Simmons over T.J. Ward, Schlereth said, and he needs to step up.

“There are going to be some one-on-one matchups that you’re going to have, and you’re going to have to win,” Schlereth said.

Covering the weapons paired with stopping the Chiefs rushing attack would make Kansas City one-dimensional, Schlereth said, thus allowing Von Miller to come in and “wreck” the game for the Broncos.

By any name — rebuild, retool — the Broncos are under construction

The Broncos may not say "rebuild," but by any reasonable definition, they're early into construction and public expectations will reflect it.
