Broncos undisciplined play falls ‘100 percent’ on VJ, says Schlereth

Earning 13 penalties against the Baltimore Ravens on the road Sunday, the Denver Broncos lost more than a full football field of yardage.
In the game in which Denver led early, the Broncos gave up 120 yards of penalties on the way to a 27-14 loss at the hands of the Ravens.
It’s a game that, for “Schlereth and Evans” host Mike Evans at least, reopened the wounds of a dismal 5-11 season a year ago.
“It’s a game they should’ve won. There were so many opportunities for them to be able to win this football game, and if not for self-inflicted wounds they should have won this football game,” Evans said.
That undisciplined play falls squarely on the shoulders of Broncos head coach Vance Joseph, Evans’ co-host Mark Schlereth said Monday.
“Your team goes out there and doesn’t perform. Your team goes out there and is loosey goosey. Your team goes out there and has a ton of penalties. That’s you,” Schlereth said. “You’re the head coach. And that’s a reflection on your coaching and a reflection on the discipline of the team and are you holding them accountable.”
After the game, Joseph estimated the penalties probably cost Denver 20 points against Baltimore, easily enough to cover the margin of victory Sunday.
“Just self-inflicted penalties. A lot of the penalties really were guys losing their composure,” Joseph said. “You’re playing a tough Baltimore team on the road, and you have 13 penalties for 120 yards, and it really honestly cost us 20 points out there. So, that obviously killed us today.”
Ultimately, Schlereth said, it could be a game in which the Broncos point to as the first signs that they weren’t good enough to “overcome stupidity.”
“It’s just a disappointing performance, and we all know that. We all understand it. We all get it. And now it’s how you respond,” Schlereth said.
