Schlereth ‘encouraged’ by Broncos response to mistakes vs. Seattle

Look not at the Denver Broncos mistakes Sunday, said Mark Schlereth, but rather how the club overcame them to beat a strong Seattle Seahawks team 27-24 in the season opener.

The “Schlereth and Evans” co-host said he was “encouraged” by how the Broncos responded to three turnovers, two which lead to Seattle scores.

“Even though there was a ton of mistakes, I was encouraged with the way they responded to those mistakes. And that’s part of this game,” Schlereth said. “If you’ve played this game … you’ve got your (behind) whipped a time or two. It happens to all of us. How do you respond to a (behind) whipping?

“Every one of those mistakes they responded to. That’s my biggest takeaway.”

MATCHUP: Schlereth: Broncos better football team than Raiders

Head coach Vance Joseph said he talked about being resilient with his team on Saturday night, that the team needs to play through adversity when it comes along.

“Last year, we had some chances where adversity showed, and we didn’t play through it,” Joseph said. “Hopefully, our team this year can play through adversity because every game is going to be tough.

“It’s a hard league, so you’re going to have some ups and downs in games, but you want your team to be resilient and play right through adversity. The good teams do that.”

And Schlereth said that had it not been for those mistakes throughout the game, the Broncos would have raced the Seahawks at home on Sunday.

“They came into this stadium and they got wore out. If not for the turnovers and if not for a couple of big plays on offense, that would have been a 17-point blowout by the Broncos,” Schlereth said. “And I get it, you’d like to blow them out. And I get it, the interceptions, you can’t have those. But every interception they responded.

“Every turnover they responded. And the defense created three turnovers so it was a wash on the turnover battle. That’s a good thing, the fact that you can respond like that is a good thing.”
