Former Buffs RB Phillip Lindsay turns heads at Broncos training camp

Aug 1, 2018, 7:37 PM

On Day 1 of Denver Broncos training camp Saturday, head coach Vance Joseph said it was “hard to believe” running back Phillip Lindsay wasn’t invited to the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this year.

After seeing Lindsay practice this week, “Pritchard and Cecil” host Cecil Lammey called it an “embarrassment,” not only that he couldn’t participate in the Combine but that the former University of Colorado running back wasn’t drafted.

“What we’ve seen from Phillip Lindsay in four days clearly proves, one, it’s a huge embarrassment to the Scouting Combine that he was not invited, and, two, it’s another embarrassment to the scouting community that this kid wasn’t drafted,” Lammey said ahead of practice Wednesday.

After watching Lindsay in the East-West Shrine Game in January, Lammey said he thought the momentum from a strong performance would have catapulted him into the minds of scouts.

But just because scouts missed on Lindsay doesn’t mean the ex-Buffs star can’t play in the NFL, Lammey said.

Linebacker Brandon Marshall said Lindsay has “some good sauce to him,” and that he expects the rookie to be the team’s third-down back in 2018.

Marshall’s defensive counterpart Von Miller said he’s one of those guys in the league that “you just can’t cover.”

And Lammey said he expects more from Lindsay than just a fun story about a Colorado kid picked up by the Broncos after going undrafted.

“He has gone, in four days, from an interesting local story … to this guy could be the starter for the Broncos at running back, not just a satellite back,” Lammey said.
