In AFC full of drama, getting Chubb deal done means ‘advantage Broncos’

More than a month out from the start of training camp, the Denver Broncos locked up its top draft pick for the foreseeable future.

On Thursday, Denver and rookie edge rusher Bradley Chubb came to an agreement on his rookie contract, which will reportedly pay the No. 5-overall pick a fully-guaranteed $27.5 million with a signing bonus of $18.1 million.

But aside from inking what the Broncos Country hopes will be a long-term impact player for the club, signing Chubb five weeks out from the start of the preseason means “no drama in Denver” amid a conference full of it.

“There is drama everywhere in this conference. Drama with the Patriots. Drama with the Steelers. I don’t know what in the hell Antonio Brown’s saying on a daily basis. Just talking nonsense,” Cecil Lammey, host of “Pritchard and Cecil,” said on Thursday. “No drama in Denver. Advantage Broncos.”

Lammey’s co-host, Mike Pritchard, said that it’s not only “great for the Broncos,” but also Chubb to get him in the right mindset to start his NFL career.

“He’s not going to have any drama hanging over his head, he’s not going to have to worry about any contract situation, and he’s going to get off to a fast start,” Pritchard said.

It’s just the latest example in what’s been a strong offseason for the Broncos, Pritchard said.

“The OTAs, the offseason conditioning, they’ve been getting after it. We know how intense and how competitive it’s been over there in terms of OTAs and, certainly, mandatory minicamp,” Pritchard said. “… But now the message that they’re sending to us, along with Bradley Chubb, is that we’ve got our business taken care of, let’s go ahead and take care of business on the field now.”

By signing on Thursday, Chubb becomes just the third top-10 pick from this year’s draft to have signed with his team, joining Indianapolis Colts guard Quenton Nelson and Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Rosen.

Also, Chubb’s deal means only one player — running back Royce Freeman — from the Broncos 10-man draft class remains unsigned.
