Griese ‘trusts’ Kubiak on Keenum, calls Broncos QB ‘resilient’

Put at least two former Denver Broncos quarterbacks in Case Keenum’s corner.

Griese — who joined “Schlereth and Evans” ahead of his keynote speech at the Denver Area Council’s annual Boy Scouts Sports Breakfast — said you hope to see a quarterback, with a “requisite skillset” and a “certain amount of experience,” put it all together for a few years.

“And I’m hoping that works for Case Keenum here in the next couple of years,” Griese said.

Griese called the newest Broncos starter, whom he says “people forgot” started ahead of Jared Goff for the Los Angeles Rams in 2015, a “resilient guy.”

“When he put the year together last year under pressure, with a good football team, and there were some pressure games, it was not an easy situation to come into,” Griese said of Keenum’s 2017 campaign.

On the way to an NFC Championship berth, Keenum started 14 games for the Minnesota Vikings in 2017, throwing 3,547 yards with 22 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, earning a record of 11-3.

But perhaps the biggest factor in a successful Broncos tenure for Keenum could be his former head coach Gary Kubiak, who serves as a senior personnel advisor for Denver.

“I trust Gary Kubiak and the time that he spent … None of us have spent time with Case Keenum, but Gary had him in Houston, had him in the meeting rooms, had him in preseason camp, and got to know how he works, how he studies, the preparation, the cognition, how he can process information,” Griese said.

Keenum started eight games for Kubiak’s Houston Texans in 2013 after having been plucked as a college free agent out of the University of Houston the season before.
