The Drive with Big Al & DMac LIVE in studio! Former sports agent Joel Corry joins the show to talk about how many teams will be in on Cousins, and how Garoppolo set the market despite being an unproven talent. Troy Renck of Denver7 joins the show to mention that during this period, players can advocate for other players but executives is a different story & teams must be careful.
The guys talk about what happens with the tampering process, and Big Al remembers hitting the free agency market both times & knowing his market. Al says the real negations happen at the Senior Bowl & the NFL Combine, and DMac dives into Albert Breer’s Sports Illustrated article on the farce of free agency’s tampering period. Also, why ‘best available’ won’t apply to drafting Barkley & Nelson with the first two overall picks, Al’s draft philosophy and why Cowherd had the worst mock draft yet. The NFL Combine, the idea of tanking games, and USA women’s hockey’s huge shootout win over Canada in the Olympics last night. Also, Big Al points out the good in Larry Nance Jr.’s story and the upside of playing with LeBron James. DMac asks Al if trading Siemian is a certainty at this point, and Big Al talks about player development. Also, Al says it’s good to give everyone a look in free agency, and everyone in the FA mix will be considered.
DMac tells Big Al Kirk Cousins looks up to Manning & Brady, and is now trying to be that type of guy. Big Al talks about how Cousins can emulate Brady & Manning while taking joy in being recruited. The guys come to an agreement on 30 million-a-year and Al says there are at least three teams that would do that deal. Also, Al says he’s in on Cousins if you can guarantee 7 to 10 years of consistent production. Al asks Troy if it’s true Peyton could have landed a bigger deal in Tennessee, and Troy is quick to mention Manning could be the greatest free agent signing of all-time. The guys talk about proposed changes to NFL scheduling and no salary cap in baseball. Big Al says the NBA has an increase in viewers due to stars in big markets, and people are changing the way they consume sports media. Also, Al asks DMac how football can be even more attractive to viewers. Big Al says there is room for growth but it’s going to take some time with the young QBs. Al talks about what will happen nine years from now with Rosen & Darnold, and commends the Jags for sticking with Bortles. Also, DMac takes a look at Joel Klatt’s mock draft. DMac dives back into Albert Breer’s Sports Illustrated article, and mentions Bill Musgrave as an influence on Derek Carr. DMac says Musgrave is not a babysitter, and asks Al which available QB is most like Carr. Al highlights Rosen & Darnold, and why Paxton Lynch was at a disadvantage with the coordinators he was provided.
