Lammey: Notable players snubbed from the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine

Feb 7, 2018, 12:00 AM | Updated: 3:24 pm

With the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Game done for the year, the next stop on my pre-draft road trip will be Indianapolis on Feb. 27 for the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine.

The combine originally started as a medical examination primarily, where teams could weigh, measure, and interview the incoming crop of rookies as they made their rankings for the 2018 NFL draft. Now, the combine is a media spectacle with hundreds of media members from around the country descending to Lucas Oil Stadium.

The list of prospects for the combine was released on Tuesday and there were some notable players left out.

Missing a combine invite does not keep a player from reaching NFL success. Prospects like Doug Baldwin (Seattle Seahawks), Julian Edelman (New England Patriots), and Pierre Garcon (San Francisco 49ers) did not get invited to the combine yet carved out respectable NFL careers.

Here are some of the more talented players who won’t be showing off for scouts in Indianapolis at the end of the month.

Daurice Fountain, WR, Northern Iowa

Fountain was a player that got a lot of attention for his performance at the Shrine Game earlier this year. He stood out during the week of practice because of his quickness, strong hands, and route-running ability. The wide receiver will now have to do his best to impress scouts at his pro day.

Good thing he’s working with Loren Landow in Denver, so no doubt he will be ready.

Poona Ford, DT, Texas

This is a talented class of defensive tackles coming into the league, but one I felt would be at the combine is Poona Ford.

Ford (Getty Images)

The 2017 co-Defensive Player of the Year in the Big 12, Ford was nearly unstoppable at times during the week of practice for the 2018 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Even without the invite, Ford has enough on film and evaluation from the Senior Bowl to be a third- or fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft.

Philip Lindsay, RB, Colorado

After a strong week of practice at the Shrine Game, Lindsay was getting plenty of buzz in scouting circles. There were James White (Patriots) comparisons thrown out there by some attending the game.

Lindsay is quick and does a good job of running inside, even though he’s a smaller back (185 pounds).
