Report: Broncos requested Baker Mayfield be placed on Senior Bowl team

One quarterback, in particular, may be atop the Denver Broncos list of prospects to see at the Senior Bowl, as the team reportedly requested Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield be placed on the team it will coach later this month.

Senior Bowl executive director Phil Savage reportedly told the ESPN U on Sirius XM on Friday that the Broncos, who’ll coach the North squad in the annual all-star game, specifically asked Mayfield be put the same team.

Denver 7 Broncos Insider Troy Renck told “Stokley and Zach” on Friday afternoon that it makes sense that the club would want Mayfield on its Senior Bowl roster to “get more information on him.”

“Intel is power, and the more information they can get on Mayfield, how he can do in their practices with their plays, their playbook, all that would be valuable information,” Renck said.

Renck said selecting Mayfield at No. 5, where the Broncos are slated to pick in this year’s NFL Draft, is “too rich” for his blood, but in any case, Denver’s in the market team-defining quarterback.

“This offseason could be a franchise-altering decision on quarterback, whether it’s through free agency or the draft,” Renck said.

During his senior season for the Sooners, Mayfield threw for 4,627 yards and 43 touchdowns on 70.5 percent passing completion with just six interceptions — good enough to bring in the Heisman Trophy in 2017.

Mayfield is one of eight quarterbacks who’ll participate in the Senior Bowl, including Wyoming’s Josh Allen, whom accepted his invite to the game on Thursday and was one of the passers general manager John Elway and company watched during bowl season.
