The Drive with Big Al & DMac LIVE in studio! NFL Network’s James Palmer joins the show to talk about the Raiders’ presser to introduce Jon Gruden, and why it was not a PR stunt.
Big Al talks about the advantages of having a left-handed QB, and DMac wants to know if Nick Saban could coach in the NFL. Tua Tagovailoa comes in for Jalen Hurts & wins the National Championship, and the guys laugh about class schedules in the SEC following the big game. DMac can’t get enough of Sean McDonough’s cracking voice, and Big Al says you’re never too old to win a scholarship. The guys talk about the Ball family playing in Lithuania, and Al says Cam Newton’s days as a read-option QB are numbered. DMac notes just how much the coaches got paid for beating Georgia in the National Championship, and the boys compare those numbers to college tuition & cost of attendance for the players.
Al & DMac discuss analytics when it comes to football, and dissect PFF’s grades on the first-round picks from ’17, including Garett Bolles & Christian McCaffrey. Al asks if it matters that Gruden is going to a city that’s never had a football team, and Palmer notes the personality that Gruden brings despite the pressure he’s under. Al tries to find out how the Broncos can locate the best playmakers using film study, and DMac talks about transferring technical analytics to film study. Also, Al marvels at the advancements in robotics & machines in today’s world. Pat McAfee breaks the news that Colts former Special Teams Coordinator Tom McMahon will be signing with the Denver Broncos. Al & DMac break down the move, and try to draw connections to Denver. Also, Big Al’s eye-test on athletes that played three years at a big school.
Al says Jalen Hurts knew he was playing badly in the National Championship game, and maybe Tua Tagovailoa should have been starting the whole season. The guys agree the transition from QB in college to QB in the pros can be smoothed out, and Al mentions it’s impossible to coach what you don’t know. Baker Mayfield speaks to Big Al when he watches tape, and Al is devastated to hear Missouri’s Drew Lock is returning for his senior year. DMac talks about Baker Mayfield being humble, and Al decides if Baker’s game can transform into a game like Drew Brees has. Al is concerned that Baker is a bad fit with this current Broncos coaching staff, and DMac is concerned Denver will draft Josh Allen. Also, Al says the Broncos will do everything in their power to land Kirk Cousins. Al hopes the Broncos smash Gruden’s Raiders, and the guys go through the offseason dates of interest leading up to the NFL Draft. Also, the guys take calls on going with Kirk Cousins or baker Mayfield.
