Wolfe knew two plays in Broncos D would stuff Cowboys on ground

Against what Derek Wolfe called the best offensive line in the NFL and the best running game in the league, the Denver Broncos made a statement on Sunday by holding Ezekiel Elliott to just 8 yards rushing on 9 attempts.

“As far as making a statement around the league, I think we definitely did that,’ Wolfe told “The Drive” on Monday.

More remarkable, however, might be that the defensive end knew just two plays into the game that the Broncos defense was set to dominate the vaunted Cowboys rushing offense.

“I didn’t think they were as good as they looked on film,” Wolfe said. “I thought they were good, but just watching them on film, they were kind of blowing guys off the ball and cutting guys and there were huge gaps for Zeke to run through.”

Denver held Dallas to just one rushing first down and 40 yards total between three runners — quarterback Dak Prescott led his team with 24 yards on three attempts.

The Broncos defense on the whole only surrendered 17 points, with its two touchdowns given up coming on short fields — drives of three and 39 yards.

But, Wolfe said, Denver’s defense still has a lot of room to improve.

“That’s the challenge, being consistent. You’ve got to do that consistently,” Wolfe said. “We can be better than that. There was a lot of mistakes made still on our side. We could be even better.”
