The Drive with Big Al & DMac LIVE! from Stoney’s Bar & Grill are joined by Cecil Lammey from the NFL Draft in Philadelphia and Tyler Polumbus at Dove Valley. Draft Day is here, and the guys discuss how hard it is to work your way from drafting in the ’20s to a pick in the top-10 for a possible shot at Christian McCaffrey. A lot of great talent begins to fall, as things set up well for the Broncos to grab their juice-man at No. 20 overall.
DMac throws out scenarios for the guys to break down as the Broncos prepare for Rd. 1 of the ’17 NFL Draft. A bunch of average tackles aren’t going to cut it for Denver, and DMac plays the game with Cecil, Tyler and Big Al. Cecil hands out efficiency ratings for the Tackles in the NFL Draft, and Big Al says Garett Bolles probably has a mortgage already. Big Al sticks to his claim that the Broncos want playmakers & Tyler is sure they have major interest in Garett Bolles. Also, DMac gets the vibe on the Houston Texans and what they can possibly do sitting at No. 25 with Patrick Mahomes dead-to-rights.
Cecil compares Myles Garrett to Julius Peppers, much to the chagrin of Big Al. Scheme still changes the draft, and the guys explain why Myles Garrett is the correct pick at No. 1 overall. The Chicago Bears give up a King’s ransom for Mitch Trubisky at No. 2 overall, just to watch the 49ers take Solomon Thomas at No. 3 overall right behind them. The fans roast the Bears as Leonard Fournette goes to the Jags at No. 4. Big Al is afraid of what Denver would have to give up to vault into the top-5 to grab Christian McCaffrey. In a surprise move, the Titans stay put at No. 5 overall and snag Corey Davis of Western Michigan as the first WR off the board. Also, Jamal Adams falls all the way to the Jets at No. 6, and Christian McCaffrey doesn’t quite make it out of the top-10 as he lands in Carolina with the Panthers at No. 8 overall.
KC trades with the Bills to jump up and grab Patrick Mahomes at No. 10 overall. Tyler doesn’t love the pick, but Big Al does, saying the Broncos are lucky the Chiefs did not take Deshaun Watson. Big Al would be a fan of moving up to get O.J. Howard, and Tyler says TE is the last difference-maker position with some first-round value for Denver. The Houston Texans look to have found their QB1, as they trade up to No. 12 overall to take Deshaun Watson out of Clemson. Haason Reddick parlays his great week at the Senior Bowl and a good combine into the 13th overall pick with the Arizona Cardinals. Defense becomes a concern after Derek Barnett & Malik Hooker go to the Eagles & Colts, respectively.
As we approach the number 20th pick for the Broncos we finally start seeing Alabama players come off the board. We get to the 20th pick and the Broncos select offensive lineman Garrett Bolles from Utah. The guys discuss the news from NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Denver tried to move up for Christian McCaffrey and also contacted the Browns for the availability of Joe Thomas. Both the Detroit Lions and Miami both go defense with their first round picks. The New York Giants make their offense better by drafting Ole Miss tight end Evan Engram. The Oakland Raiders take defensive back Gareon Conley with the 24th pick. The Browns use their 2nd first round pick and take Jabrill Peppers from Michigan.
The guys continue to discuss the Broncos drafting Garrett Bolles with the 20th pick. The guys wonder if Denver should have tried to trade up a few spots and get O.J. Howard. Cecil got to catch up with Garrett Bolles after he was drafted. More trades occurred late in the first round as the San Francisco 49ers moved back into the first round to take Alabama LB Reuben Foster. The New Orleans Saints close out the first round by taking Wisconsin OT Ryan Ramczyk. We then hear from Broncos GM John Elway and Head Coach Vance Joseph.
