Polumbus: Broncos have until mid-May before moving on from Romo

Once thought to have a quick resolution, the Tony Romo saga approaches its third full week with no indication whether the veteran quarterback will be with the Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, or a television network next season.
And Denver could allow it to drag on for another month, or longer, before moving on, “Polumbus and Cecil” co-host Tyler Polumbus said Friday.
Polumbus said he thinks the Broncos can afford to bring in Romo as late as mid-May, before the team’s final minicamp of the offseason, before giving up on him donning orange and blue next season.
“Now, for me, my drop-dead date for Tony Romo is going to be some point during OTAs and before the final minicamp of the offseason,” Polumbus said. “I don’t want to bring him in during training camp. It’s too late. It’s too far gone.”
Ideally a deal gets done with Romo before the NFL Draft on April 27, Polumbus said, but those clamoring for a resolution may just have to wait longer.
“Whether you like it or not, whether that’s too long or not for us impulsive, on-demand people in this world … that’s the reality,” Polumbus said.
However, there is an upside to the Romo situation playing out through the first few weeks of OTAs, Polumbus said.
“If it were to go this long, here’s the good part about it. You could get a solid two weeks of Paxton Lynch as your quarterback for the Denver Broncos,” Polumbus said.
Lynch could get the bulk of snaps as last year’s starter Trevor Siemian works back in after offseason surgery on his non-throwing shoulder.
And indications thus far from the NFL owner’s meetings in Phoenix this week point to no conclusion regarding Romo in the near future.
