Stokley on Romo: ‘I think he retires,’ ‘taking time’ with decision

Instead of the Denver Broncos or Houston Texans, or any other NFL teams vying for his services, could the landing spot for Tony Romo be the reserved/retired list of the Dallas Cowboys?
It’s a possibility, 104.3 The Fan’s Brandon Stokley said Thursday.
Two weeks after Romo was reportedly set to be released, paving the way for the Broncos or Texans to scoop him up, the veteran quarterback remains on the Cowboys roster as owner Jerry Jones reportedly explores trade options.
But Stokley said he thinks Romo’s reaction, or lack-there-of, indicates he’s mulling hanging up his cleats.
“I think he retire. I think he is done playing football, concerned about his long-term health, and the more that I look at this situation, the more it makes sense,” Stokley said.
If Romo wants to keep playing, Stokley said he should be more upset with Jones’ supposed last-minute change of plans.
“If I wanted to continue to play, and he just lied to me, I would come out and shame him and put it out there that Jerry Jones is a liar,” Stokley said.
Aside from an Instagram video post thanking Dallas fans on March 9, the day he was reportedly set to be released, Romo’s been quite on the social media front.
“I’m not saying Tony Romo would come out and declare war on Jerry Jones right now if he wants to keep playing, but he might just have some little subtle Tweet,” said Tyler Polumbus, Stokley’s co-host Thursday.
“Some little comment along the lines of, ‘Hey I cannot wait to figure out where I’m playing football next year.’ Like, ‘Man, this journey with Dallas has been awesome. It is going to be incredible to figure where I’m going. I can’t wait to get to work.’ Something along those lines, just to let the people know that he’s excited to go there.”
Catching on with a team now, as opposed to later in the summer, would allow Romo to develop relationships with his teammates and give his input on the offense, Stokley said.
“You get to training camp, and the Denver Broncos have their offense already in,” Stokley said.
Along those lines, Polumbus said his “drop-dead date” before Denver should move on would be halfway through offseason workout.
Earlier this week, however, 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis said he thinks Denver could wait for Romo as long as training camp, especially if second-year quarterback Paxton Lynch isn’t ready to compete for the starting role yet.
Right now, though, Stokley said he thinks Romo’s still trying to make up his mind on if he truly wants to hang ‘em up, doing his due diligence and weighing his priorities — his wife and children, his long-term health, and
“Obviously, you don’t want to just make a decision spur of the moment,” Stokley said. “So I think he’s just taking his time, and he’s OK with this situation because he is really, really considering just walking away from the game.”
