Schlereth: Dennison hire shows problem lies with Broncos personnel

According to Mark Schlereth, the hiring of Rick Dennison by the Buffalo Bills as the team’s offensive demonstrates one thing: The issues with the Denver Broncos offense last year had more to do with the personnel than the coaching staff.

On Friday, the “Schlereth and Evans” co-host called Dennison’s hire a “statement” by the rest of the NFL that the Broncos staff was not “over their heads”

“It’s not about the coaching. It’s about the personnel. And the hiring of Rick Dennison is basically the NFL’s way of telling us, as Broncos Country, that this personnel on the offensive side of the ball has to be revamped,” Schlereth said. “It’s not about revamping the coaching staff. That’s not going to be enough.”

So far this offseason, however, Denver has revamped its offensive coaching staff, bring in a bevy of former offensive coordinators at a number of positions on that side of the ball.

Former San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy will return to the Broncos in his same offensive coordinator role he had from 2009 to 2012.

Bill Musgrave — offensive coordinator with the Oakland Raiders the past two season — will step into the role of quarterbacks coach, former Cleveland Browns and Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson will be the team’s offensive line coach, and former Chargers and San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Geep Chryst will be the tight ends coach.

But Schlereth said the coaching changes would not suffice and that the Broncos would need to be active in acquiring more talent on the offensive side of the ball this offseason.

“The Broncos are tasked with overcoming the lack of personnel on the offensive side of the ball this offseason at the procurement stage of the NFL year. That’s free agency and that’s the draft. And that’s where this Broncos organization needs to go so they can have success next season,” Schlereth said.
