Salisbury: Elway should make decision on Broncos QB with coach input

The Denver Broncos will head into its offseason for the second year in a row with an open competition at quarterback and uncertainty of who’ll be under center come September.
During his first press conference as head coach, Vance Joseph called Paxton Lynch and Trevor Siemian both “young” and “capable” and the competition will help them both grow.
“Whoever is the best for our team, (we’ll) make sure that’s who is going to play,” Joseph said.
But who’ll ultimately make the final decision on the starting role, SBNation and ESPN Houston’s Sean Salisbury told Sandy Clough on Monday, should probably be general manager John Elway.
“We know who the final guy who’s making the decision on what the menu’s going to be that day at a high-end restaurant.,” Salisbury said, alluding to Elway being the head chef.
But the final say from Elway comes with the caveat that the coaches, including Joseph but also offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave, should be engrained in the decision-making process, Salisbury said.
“The guy who’s going to coach him every day is Musgrave. The guy who’s going to call all the plays is going to be Mike McCoy, who’s been with a couple pretty good quarterbacks in Manning and Philip Rivers. And then Vance is the head coach, and he’s the one ultimately responsible,” Salisbury said.
Get all four guys in a room, Salisbury said, and methodically break down who should play quarterback for the Broncos until you get to the point where the group “can live with” the decision.
“If you can get to the point where you have six in one, a half-dozen in the other, then you pull the trigger. But I don’t want four guys making the decision. I want four guys having a say in the decision,” Salisbury said.
