“Culture.” It is a word that was spoken 13 times during the introductory press conference for new Broncos head coach Vance Joseph on Thursday.
It’s something general manager John Elway called “very important,” especially for a team less than a year removed from hoisting the Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl 50 winners.
And it’s that “culture of winning” that fell short in 2016 with the club’s first missed postseason since 2010, and philosophy in which Joseph hopes to right and take to newer, better heights.
“Mr. Bowlen has set a standard here or winning and a culture here of winning. It’s my job to keep that standard, keep that culture and heighten it to new levels,” Joseph said during his press conference.
In speaking with 104.3 The Fan’s Charles Johnson and Alfred Williams after being introduced as the Broncos 16th head coach, Joseph said Denver’s roster has litany of talented players who not only want to win but expect to win, which shouldn’t be far off.
“That’s where it starts. The culture’s right, and you have talent. That equals winning. Culture with no talent, you won’t win. Talent with no culture, you won’t win. It’s here,” Joseph said.
And Joseph said he’s embracing that expectation to perform at a high level, saying his team is talented and ready to win, so they’ve now “got to go make it work” on the field.
“We have to embrace the culture here. Who wants to lose? I rather be in a job where it’s expected to win. I prefer a job that you can win four or five games isn’t OK. I’m embracing it. I want the players to embrace it. That’s what’s expected and that’s the fun part about this business,” Joseph said.
