In a trade among two of the AFC’s top teams, the Denver Broncos sent a 2017 draft pick to the New England Patriots in exchange for tight end A.J. Derby.
According to the team’s website, the Broncos gave up a fifth-round pick in exchange for Derby just ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline on Nov. 1. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter first reported the trade.
“A.J. is a young tight end who can help us immediately,” Broncos general manager John Elway told the team website. “He has tremendous upside and will fit in well on our team.”
Safety Shiloh Keo was released as the corresponding move needed to add Derby to the roster.
New England drafted the 6-foot-5, 255-pound Derby in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The tight end spent his entire rookie campaign on injured reserve, making his debut in September.
In four regular season games this season, Derby’s seen the field on special teams and in a limited capacity on offense. He caught 15 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown in the preseason.
