Clough: Broncos Super Bowl repeat shot better due to team’s youth

When the Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII, they had an average player age of 25.31, good enough for fourth youngest in the NFL that season according to PhillyVoice.com.
Denver, on the other hand, had nearly the oldest (28th) in the league at 26.75 years old.
The following season, Seattle nearly repeated as Super Bowl champions with, again, one of the younger teams in the league.
So, how does Denver’s 2016 youth (average age of 25.47 for fifth-youngest in the NFL) bode for a team trying to repeat for the first time in more than a decade?
Good, said Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough Friday.
“The Broncos are one of the youngest teams in the league. I think there are a lot of good things about that,” Clough said.
“Seattle was one of the youngest Super Bowl champions when they won the Super Bowl three years ago. And they came back and made the Super Bowl, and probably should have won the game, the following year.”
Clough recollected that after the Broncos 1998 season, in which they’d secured a second-straight Super Bowl win, the team was among the oldest in the league. And in 1999, Denver started 0-4.
“So in terms of repeating, your chances of doing it with one of the league’s youngest teams are obviously better than your chances of doing it with one of the league’s older teams,” Clough said.
Denver has a chance to go up 3-0 in its title defense Sunday in its first road game since mid-December 2015 Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
