Doug Krieger, aquatic section manager of the aquatic nuisance species & boating program joins Terry to talk about funding and tax revenue. Doug tells Terry the state needed to pay back energy companies and had to cut funding, and Terry says it’s impacting boating all across the United States. Doug highlights problems with infestation & mitigation, and maintaining negative status. Terry brings up where people could have picked up muscles & brought them to Colorado, and the water is typically owned by private entities. Inspections and funding have come a long way, but some high-elevation waters like Green Mountain need funding. Also, Doug wants to maintain the quality that boaters have come to enjoy, and warns listeners about boat plug fees & inspections for 2017.
Nate Zelinsky of Tightline Outdoors joins Terry to talk about spring pike. Terry gives Nate shotgun pointers, and Nate says there are great resources in the outdoors. Terry mentions that pike are taking off, and Nate talks about the early season for walleye pre-spawn this year. Nate says normally, pike season begins mid-May, and encourages the mindset of preparing for an aggressive fish. Nate preaches a large bait with a slow presentation, and says this is the first year with good opportunities for large fish, and even a shot at a state record at 11-Mile. Also, Nate says pike are a nightmare to catch in a spawn.
Mark Caughlan, park manager at Larimer County Parks updates Terry on the boat ramp openings and schedule for Larimer County parks. Carter & Horsetooth open up April 1st, and Mark helps the listeners prepare by mentioning the brand-new area information center at Horsetooth. Mark says the good ‘ol days are now at Horsetooth for Smallmouth, and they are doing their best to help with the challenges of funding.
J Wenum, the area wildlife manager in Gunnison, joins Terry to discuss the change to antler collecting regulations in Gunnison and the Southwest. The guys talk about being a responsible hiker, and how to avoid putting the animals in stressful situations. Terry bring up how the animals can get through the winter, get healthy, and not get harassed. Also, J mentions how to check the website for updates and the local & field office available to call.
Jason Vincent of Sportsman’s Warehouse joins Terry to announce their partnership & the return of Ask The Expert. Terry’s Tackle Talk on using the Gulp! & Powerbait 3-inch long trout worm and salmon eggs. Gulp! has the added scent, and Powerbait has the flexibility. Terry likes to be active, and typically uses a No. 6 Aberdeen hook with the Powerbait trout worm for rapid movement. Also, Terry offers up some ways to rig your trout worms & eggs to keep your line from getting tangled and good ways to add a split-shot to your setup.
Michelle Seubert joins the show to talk about Barr Lake State Park’s Grand Re-Opening and ribbon-cutting. Michelle talks about the eagle’s nest from the gazebo boardwalk, as well as the archery range.
