Doug Pachelli of Lake Pueblo State Park joins Terry to talk about Lake Pueblo & what fish are biting right now, including catfish & trout. Doug says Pueblo is a smorgasbord for fishing right now, and also has a tremendous amount of camping opportunities now with upgraded electrical services. Biking & hiking trails are available, as well as bird-watching, and Doug mentions the shore fishing opportunities in the North wildlife area. Also, high water helps with good sized bass & crappie, and Doug says 15″ crappie & state record blue catfish are not uncommon. With such a diverse park, you never know what’s going to be at the end of the line at Pueblo.
Terry highlights the Berkley Power Tube & ways to rig it, including what to do for an active presentation & the varieties of tubes to include in your tackle box. Terry prefers white and pumpkin colors, and 3 1/2 & 2 1/2″ tubes. Terry mentions the presentation will fall faster with a heavy jig, and what to expect if you’re dragging along the bottom. Also, how long a typical package lasts, success rate catching trout, and average cost.
Nate Zelinsky of Tightline Outdoors joins the show with a special guest, huntress Randi Clark. Nate talks about 100-fish days at Pueblo and sticking to the Front Range, and asks Randi how she makes the boys look bad. Randi gives a female perspective on the sport, and the love of hunting. Drive & education are key, and Randi mentions the importance of getting women involved in the outdoors. Randi says she learned more about wildlife through hunting than in a classroom, and female mentors help for those intimidated by the male hunter or guide.
Dan Swanson of Fishful Thinker joins the show to help Terry with this week’s AS THE EXPERT on catching walleye from shore. Terry mentions when walleye are on the rocks spawning, and Dan mentions the shallow fish currently tend to be more aggressive. Transition areas on the east side of South Bay are highlighted, as well as key pieces of cover that will hold an edge. Dan mentions that deep access helps with comfort, and the wind stirs up the ecosystem. Also, tactics with crank baits & slip bobbers, and Carolina rigging a slow-death style with killer crawlers or leaches.
Cory Kraft of Colorado Clays joins the show to talk about the Sunday, June 11th event for those who have never handled a shotgun, and the instructors that will be on site to walk you through the process. Also, sizing for a shotgun that fits & swings naturally, exposure for youth shooters and the recently started chapter for lady pistol shooters.
Bob Broscheid joins the show to talk about the bill that has been postponed indefinitely, and what a crushing blow it was to Colorado Parks & Wildlife. Bob talks about the support groups coming together, and the need for large conservation organizations. Terry is upset some of the Republicans in the state senate backed out at the last minute, and Bob highlights some things we could have done better. It’s a complicated process, and the same politics that get a bill pushed through are the same ones that kill a bill. Bob discusses the long division with legislature, and how all hunters & anglers need to get involved in the process. Bob says if there is no money, there will be no argument.
